Our highlight of the week: a visit to the conversion scheme Scope Construction are undertaking for Homefield College in Sileby. A highlight for two reasons:
Firstly, work was briefly stopped to welcome Business Studies students from WQE College, as part three of the Unbox Your Future (UBYF) Programme in partnership with the Leicester and Leicestershire Careers Hub.
Safe working zones were created to allow Managing Director Maz Patel, Head of Business Development Glenn Slater, Operations Manager Jim Burman and site manager Jason Pughe, to give students a tour of the site, whilst providing insights into how construction companies run their projects/business operations; covering the various people and roles involved, pricing, contracts, design, information management, programme management, cashflow and profit and loss. The student teams who built the winning structures in the Straw Bridge challenge were also presented with their prizes. And as a finale they were given a drone demo, which really seemed capture their interest!
The site visit marks the conclusion of our first UBYF programme, something both Maz Patel and Glenn Slater say they have found to be very rewarding and hope to repeat with WQE College and other education providers.
Secondly it was great to see how well the project is progressing; with the roof structure completed and roof tiling underway, the windows and veluxes installed, the first floor now in place, partitions constructed and first fix M&E well progressed. The site team can now start to see the finishing line on this complex project which has presented a number of structural/design challenges in retaining the façade, walls and gables as well as installing an additional floor and new roof.
